This car, the Packard "Old Pacific", was one of the first automobiles to drive across the United States. The poor or nonexistent roads in 1903 made it a dirty, gruelling trip. At one point, canvas strips had to be laid down to enable the car to cross sand in Nevada. In those days, cars that established or broke a record were the best advertisement a company could have.
